Animal Services

The Citrus Heights Animal Services Division is committed to providing affordable, compassionate animal services to the citizens of Citrus Heights. It is our goal to:
  • Deliver visible support and community education
  • Empower responsible pet owners
  • Foster community involvement
  • Promote healthy human-animal relationships in our community
On May 1, 2012, the city began a new Animal Services program to better serve its citizens and their pets. On weekdays, the city has an Animal Services Officer (ASO) available during normal business hours. See below for after hours services.

Business hours: Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, except holidays.

Afterhours: At night and on weekends or holidays only, the Animal Services Division operates an emergency dispatch service for extreme cases. Dial Animal Services voice mail at 916-725-7387, press 1 to leave a message or press 2 to be transferred to the Citrus Heights Police Department if it's urgent.


Services provided through the city include:
  • Stray Animals - Stray animals are picked up, scanned for microchips, checked for licenses, and when possible returned to owners without ever leaving Citrus Heights. Unidentified animals are taken to the Sacramento SPCA (SSPCA), 6201 Florin-Perkins Road, Sacramento 95828.  The SSPCA is open Wednesday - Sunday, 11 am - 6 pm.  Call 916-383-7387 for more information about clinic hours, which are scheduled differently.
  • Adoptions - Citrus Heights encourages you to adopt a pet from the County's animal shelter, your local SPCA and rescue groups.
    Adopt a 'City Kitty' through River City Cat Rescue - weekends at Petco on Greenback Ln at Auburn Blvd.
  • Licensing - You may purchase a dog or cat license at:
    City Hall - 6360 Fountain Square Drive, Citrus Heights or effective February 2017, online at
  • Referral Resources - Referrals are made for spay and neuter clinics, low cost vaccinations, and low cost veterinary care.
  • Helpful Tips - Helpful tips are provided about keeping your pets safe and how to live in harmony with wildlife.
  • Enforcement - We enforce municipal codes and ordinances regarding vaccinations, leash laws, animal endangerment, and licensing.
